Fishing that both Utilizes and Protects Resources

Akita's rocky and beach-lined coast stretches approximately 260kilometers from north to south, with the Oga Peninsula at its center. The warm Tsushima current and the cold Liman current meet off the coast. Over a hundred types of fish are regularly caught, including cold-water fish such as salmon and trout, warm-water fish such as yellowtail and tuna, and shellfish.

We increase our stock of fish and shellfish by releasing red sea bream and prawn fry, and we improve our fishing grounds by establishing reefs and creating breeding grounds for abalone and other shellfish.

We have especially focused upon improving the natural environment for sandfish- considered to be Akita's prefectural fish- by releasing fry, creating spawning grounds, and limiting the fishing season and catch. As a result, sandfish have been making a comeback and our resource management has been highly evaluated nationwide.
