Mirror with Senkoku Senju Kannon Image
(Nakasen Town) |
The mirror was excavated at what is now Nakasen Town in 1677. On its face, there is an engraving of Senju Kannon (Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara) standing in the center, flanked by eight Kannon and pagods of Basusen and Kudokuten. On its back, are hosoka (auspicious flowers), aquatic birds, and butterflies positioned symmetrically.
They are bronze, 13.5centimeters in diameter, 6millimeters thick, tin-coated, and thought to have been made in the 11th century. This is the only national treasure in Akita.

Koshio Shrine
(Omagari City) |
The main building was built by Jinbei, the renowned architect of Hida, under the supervision of his bugyo (reeve) Togashi in 1570, the late Muromachi Period. The beautiful relief of chrysanthemum in the hall is a rare masterpiece, as is the Chinese pattern of wisteria that is engraved upon the tabasami (the upper part of the hall). Rare wood carving techniques applied in many other places reflect Jinbei's great skill.
The mixture of Japanese, Chinese and Indian styles characterizes the architecture of the time. It is also typical of architecture in an area with heavy snowfall. It well expresses Jinbei's individuality.

The Kusanagi House
(Tazawako Town) |
A reference to the Tenpo Era (1831-1844) of the Edo Period on a hamaya (an arrow that drives away evil spirits) that was discovered in the house indicates that it was built around that time.
Indeed, it is typical of the architecture of that time, with its magariya , where the main building and the doma (earth-floored hall) cross, forming an 'L' shape.
This house is typical of magariya style farmhouses in the Senboku area, with the design characteristics of upper class farmhouses in the late Edo Period.

Akita Bank's Head Office
(Akita City) |
The building was constructed in 1912 and was used as Akita Bank's head office until 1969. It is a 2-storeyed Renaissance brick building, with a foundation made of oga stones, produced in Oga Peninsula, Akita. On the outside, the white tiles of the first floor and the red bricks of the second floor give it a brilliant look. Inside, there are baroque decorations, such as a relief on the ceiling of what used to be the Sales Department.
It was opened to the public as the 'Akita City Museum of Red Bricks' in 1985.

Stones of 1-2 meters in diameter or length are arranged in such a way that they form a double circle. The outer is 40-50 meters in diameter, and the inner is 10-15 meters, with another group of stones forming a sun clock at a particular position between the two.
It is thought to have been a ceremonial site or a cemetery.
