In August 2001, the 6th World Games will be held in Akita to mark the beginning of new century. Similar to the Olympic Games, the World Games are world-class sports convention that is held once four years, after the year of summer Olympic Games.

The features of the World Games include :
1.Contestants compete in items that are not included in the Olympic Games.
2.Contestants should be selected by individual sports federations that govern the sport, rather than by their nation.
3.All events should be held at existing facilities that were not specifically built for the Games.
4.Cultural events for exchanges also play an major role in the Games.

The Games will be held from 16th to 26th August 2001. There will be 26 official and 5 demonstration sports games, drawing about 3000 competitors and officials from 80 different countries and regions all over the world.
