World Treasure Shirakami Mountains

The Shirakami Mountains, ranging over Akita and Aomori prefectures, are registered in the "World Nature Legacy" because the world's most valuable virgin beech tree forest grows there. Also, there are many precious plants and animals residing in these mountains. It is very important to spread understanding of this wondrous nature and to protect this forest for posterity. Because of this fact, construction is continuing on the "World Heritage Center" in Fujisato Town. Also, as a consideration for the protection of wildlife, people are prohibited to enter into core of "World Nature Legacy" from Akita prefecture side, that is why, the surrounding areas are also being upgraded.
