Through rigorous education and practical training, Akita fosters a fantastic pool of human resources ready to support the development of companies.

The Akita Prefectural University was founded in April 1999 with the aim to become a center for cultivating new industry in the 21st century. Through education and research, the University's two faculties-the Faculty of Bio-Resource Science, and the Faculty of Systems Science and Technology-seek to foster the ability to analyze social issues in terms of systems concepts, and to bring those concepts to reality by conducting creative R&D in collaboration with industry, academic, community, and government institutions. The Faculty of Systems Science and Technology is located in the Honjo-Yuri area where there is a concentration of leading-edge electronics and precision instruments industries. The University is not only conducting joint research with these companies but is also actively pursuing exchanges with other R&D centers. In fact, a postgraduate school was also established in April 2002.

Launching the Akita International University
Akita Prefecture is preparing to establish a new international university in order to prepare globally competitive human resources for an international business environment and community. Scheduled to open in April 2004, it will matriculate 100 students year each year up to a total enrollment of 400. Employing American style programs based on the acquiring practical skills, the university will introduce a unique curriculum of achievement in international business theory and global studies. Moreover, the university's partnership with Minnesota State University will also make possible international transfers of academic credits. Hence, students will have the opportunity to earn dual degrees between Japan and the U.S.
Students will gain a global vision and perspective in order to meet the growing demand for globally competitive human resources, especially among foreign-affiliated corporations. Graduates will no doubt play a key role in promoting future international business opportunities and establishing new roads of economic exchange between Akita and the world.
